Ongoing ID.me Verification Issues Due to Special Characters in Legal Name
Dear California Community Colleges Tech Center Support Team,
My name is Oğuzcan Alpaslan, and I am reaching out regarding a persistent issue I have experienced with the ID.me verification process, which appears to stem from the special character "Ğ" in my legal name, as used in the Turkish alphabet.
While the original problem I faced with ID.me has recently been resolved, I encountered multiple issues during the verification process due to the inability of the system to recognize or accept the "Ğ" character. This affected not only the ID.me portal but also document uploads and other parts of the verification workflow.
As a Turkish citizen, my legal name is Oğuzcan Alpaslan, and all of my official documents (including identification) reflect this exact spelling. Substituting the "Ğ" with a standard "G" (e.g., writing "Oguzcan" instead of "Oğuzcan") is not legally accurate and would contradict my official records.
At this point, I have successfully verified my identity through ID.me and linked it with the California Community Colleges system. However, I am now encountering a new error message that reads: "invalid.characters" when trying to proceed further. Additionally, if I attempt to modify my name to resolve the error, the "VERIFY" status disappears, and I am prompted to go through the ID.me verification process again, which I have already completed.
I would greatly appreciate your guidance and assistance in resolving this issue without requiring me to alter the legal spelling of my name. I believe this issue may be related to system limitations in handling non-ASCII characters, and I hope a workaround or correction can be implemented to ensure students with international characters in their names can successfully complete their applications.
Thank you for your time and support. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Oğuzcan Alpaslan
